Corona; not just a "passable" brewski
The problem that I seem to have whenever I sit down
to write one of these is that I always have no idea how I should start. Given
the current situation involving you-know-what, I was hesitant in using my usual
brand of not-so-insightful, yet not-so-insensitive humor. Then again, I think
we could all benefit from a brief time-out from all the doomsday rhetoric and pseudo-suicidal
disregard that a lot of people have shown (I’ll get to that in a minute)
and start this off with........there ain’t
nothing like an old-fashioned crisis to bring out the best and the worst in
people!
So, we’re in a global pandemic.Granted, things are starting to look better, but it was pretty rough for a while. Entire economies had grinded to a halt. Medical facilities were filling up faster than ever. Hoarding of supplies had become almost second nature (I mean....toilet paper? Seriously?). And social distancing was, and still is, an almost enforceable decree (for the record, I’m not arguing against this, since it’s a necessary measure to contain and prevent the spread of this illness). All in all, this has been a monumental, almost hilarious circus, with many wondering how it could have gotten this bad and worried about when (and let’s be honest, some of us are still wondering “if”) things will go back to normal.
So, that about sums up the size of this ludicrously devastating situation that’s affecting so many of us. But then, that’s not really what this blog post is about. It’s about the folks working at hospitals, supermarkets, on public transportation, in powerplants and everywhere else deemed necessary, where they’re risking their own well-being to ensure ours. This is about the social media groups that have been formed to help people who can’t help themselves (and for those who’ve been making some pretty clever memes to help us laugh through this). This is about the people who have chosen to isolate themselves in order to do their part to prevent the spread of this thing (as opposed to those who would voluntarily partake in a “Corona party”, which evidently is now an actual thing.....seriously, Google it).
So, why am I writing this? To make 2 very clear statements. 1) As a species and a global civilization, we’ve survived our fair share of impending apocalyptic events (like SARS, bird flu, Y2K, Mad Cow, and the list goes on and on). We survived all that and we’ll survive this if we all do our part. And 2), and I cannot emphasize this enough; CALM......DOWN! Losing our minds will not get us anywhere.

So, let’s review the moral of this post/unenthusiastic rant.
Wash your hands. Keep your distance. Keep calm. There’s never an appropriate time for a “Corona party” (and that includes before the pandemic ever happened). Share your supplies. Be there for one another. Help each other get through this.

Or don’t. Like I said, nothing like a crisis to bring out
the best or the worst in people......but here’s the punchline.... you can
choose.
So, what’s it gonna be?
