Season of Gratitude

Does anyone   know the story about the scorpion and the frog? The story goes that once upon a time, a scorpion was trying to cross a river, but couldn’t because it couldn’t swim. So, it comes across a frog and convinces it to carry him across. Half way there, the frog feels a sting on his back and is paralyzed. Realizing that he’d be stung, he scream at the scorpion that they both were going to die and asked why he stung him. The last thing he heard before drowned was “because it’s my nature”. Sure, that shit’s haunting and chilling, but you gotta admit, we can all relate. I start with this because of the impending holidays, i.e. Christmas and new years. Of course, people all over the world are either emptying their savings accounts to buy gifts for folks that will probably end up in the back of an attic or going out and getting drunk to forget the holidays. If you’re like me, then you fall under the latter. In my case, there’s good reason, but in order to explain that, I wou

Excelsior

Did we ever live in an age of heroes? I’m curious about if there ever was such a time. Individuals that contributed and impacted in such a way that it altered our perceptions of our potential and fallacy. As I write this, I find myself wondering if anyone is even that capable. But, I recently learned a new word....or rather, discovered the definition of a word that I’d heard repeatedly over the years. Excelsior . Excelsior , a Latin word meaning “ever upward” or “still higher”. Commonly known as the official motto of the U.S. state of New York, it’s come to be associated with another individual; Stanley Martin Lieber, a.k.a. Stan Lee. I’m not behind on current events. Personal matters have been the reason for this delayed pseudo-eulogy. But hey, better late than never, right? Still though, since there have been so many statements made about this man, I’ve decided to go a different route. Instead of speaking about who he was to me, I’ll be talking about what he’s given me. I’m

You're Welcome

I had a very particular idea of how I was going to write this following blog piece, but after a few conversations with some concerned parties, my approach has deviated somewhat for reasons that I can’t fully articulate. Nonetheless, I beg your indulgence. As for those of a French/post-colonial persuasion, although I would normally ask for you to read this and bear an open mind, you’ll forgive me if I choose to not make that request.   For those of you who have been living under a rock these past several weeks, let me turn back the clock. France won World Cup 2018 and deservedly so. Although I couldn’t be bother to actually keep track of the games, I can only assume that they played well and wanted it more than the other nations (who I assume were just as deserving as France).   However, what made this particular French victory (the last one being in 1998) all the more significant was that the majority of the French squad weren’t originally French, but immigrants or children of

Colorful Confidence

I think most people will agree that confidence is not only attractive, it’s absolutely intoxicating (for those of you that require some clarification, I said CONFIDENCE, not ARROGANCE). I think as a trait, it’s one that not only inspires admiration and respect, but it can also contribute to the fortification in the confidence of others. Of course, that would also require a desire from the first party to   indulge in said fortification and given how unpredictable people can be when performing random acts of kindness, who’s to say that person A would even want to help person B, much less try.........but I digress as per usual.  I’m sitting in a crowded bus, on my way home after having been out all day with friends in my fair city. What made this day (the previous Saturday) special was the celebration of Pride. That’s right, that day of the year where the LBGT community can kick it into gear and be proud. While on the bus, a particular group of men caught my attention. Sure, it was th
