Convention

"I should tell yee the story of William Wallace. English historians will say that I am a liar, but history has been written by those who have hung heroes". If any of you had seen the movie "Brave heart" (starring Mel Gibson, in one of his finest and most defining roles), they would know that this is the opening line from the movie. While I would never dream of comparing myself to either Wallace or Gibson, I do feel that quite a few issues are tackled in the film, aside from the heroic deeds of the former, which led to the eventual liberation of Scotland from English tyranny, as well as the brilliant story telling of the latter, which lead to quite a few Oscar wins.
The key issue here is convention & conformity. The labels that society puts upon people who are merely different. One might be fool hearted to believe that man has come a long way since the days of slavery of various races & ethnic groups, simply by virtue of their skin color, or the wicked persecution experienced during the Salem witch hunts of Salem, Mass., which resulted in the deaths of many women, due to the superstition & ignorance of the masses. But not only would they be wrong, they would be foolish & so goddamn stupid to believe that anything has really changed.
Persecution is still rampant. People are judged & label, bullied & made fun of, insulted & abused, for various reasons. But the one label that has always been ludicrous & even absurd to me has always been the label of being "not normal".
If we were to look at normal, it may appear like just another word. But look closer & you will see that despite the rather simple nature of the word, there really is no clear cut explanation of it. The most accurate definition that comes to mind in reference to the word is it being "a series of behavioral traits that are considered acceptable within any given society & hence, part of the norm". Satisfied?? Look closer. Taking that definition into account, then we can summarize that we had just describe the concept of common, not normal. For example, within the global society it would be considered not only disrespectful, but unhealthy, unhygienic & quite revolting to spit in ones food. Yet, within the Amazon jungle, the tribes there create & ferment their own brand of liquor, using their own concoctions, as well as by adding their own saliva to that mixture, while it is boiling & fermenting, to give it that "special kick". The minute point I make here is that normal is simply another element of perspective that an individual has, based on their society & what is deemed, appropriate. Therefore, it simply makes it common, and acceptable. But normal?? Normal, as I understand the concept, simply does not exist. It is merely one speaking in semantics, referring once again, to common. We live in a day & age where individuals pierce various parts of their anatomy (resulting in a temporary, but nonetheless shitload of pain), placing rings & bars through them, for no benefit whatsoever other than to satisfy some appeal that was either individualistic to begin with or has simply become another acceptable aspect of demographic society.
Yet, society has always demonstrated a lack of understanding towards people who don't fit into this norm of acceptance. Those who choose to live outside the boundaries of conformity that's placed upon them, by society or what not.
I write this to acknowledge these individuals & to simply say, FUCK THE WHOLE WORLD. THEY NEITHER DICTATE NOR DECIDE WHO YOU ARE. I say it in the name & defense of all these people. People who decide who & what they are, instead of allowing mass appeal & general population consensus to determine what they like & how they act. I say it for the nerd in high school that still plays dungeons & dragons online with over-excited 12-year-olds. I say it for the 40-year-old virgin who has yet to experience the forbidden pleasures in life. I say it for the young men & women, who's less than appealing physical appearance hides minds & creativity of astounding degree. I say it for the over-weight pre-teens who'd rather be at home, watching a good movie & enjoying an even better meal, than starving themselves so that they can fit into the latest designer wear, for no reward, other than to impress a bunch of emotionally-cruel, socially-deformed, individualistically-challenged plastic heads.
And I write this for my brother, a young man who has always stuck out in a crowd, not because he chose to, but simply because he did & he accepted that about himself. My brother, who taught me one of the greatest lessons in my life that still shapes me into the person I have yet to become. "Convention is a shelter for those who lack imagination". And he has always shown to me, time & again, that he would rather be left out in the cold, all alone, then compromise that which makes him different & ultimately better than the rest of the refuse that is our peer group, that I at one time referred to as, our friends.
Bottom line, FUCK THE WORLD & EVERY LAST FOOL IN IT!!!! Why be like everyone else, when you can just be you??

  1. This was a very good read.
Reminded me very much of this:

“I don't like ass kissers, flag wavers or team players. I like people who buck the system. Individualists. I often warn people: "Somewhere along the way, someone is going to tell you, 'There is no "I" in team.' What you should tell them is, 'Maybe not. But there is an "I" in independence, individuality and integrity.'" Avoid teams at all cost. Keep your circle small. Never join a group that has a name. If they say, "We're the So-and-Sos," take a walk. And if, somehow, you must join, if it's unavoidable, such as a union or a trade association, go ahead and join. But don't participate; it will be your death. And if they tell you you're not a team player, congratulate them on being observant.”
